Peggy Parcell

October 06, 1933 - May 01, 2022

Alma Margaret “Peggy” (McDowell) Parcell, 88, of Lockridge passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at her home in Lockridge with her loving family at her side.

Peggy was born on October 6, 1933, in Frenchburg, Kentucky, the daughter of Merl Hassler and Ruth Elizabeth (Leet) McDowell. She moved with her family to West Chester, Iowa in 1938. She attended school at West Chester, graduating in 1951. She went on to attend Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, to get her teaching certificate. Peggy taught in a country school for 2 years. Peggy was united in marriage to Keith Leon Parcell on March 16, 1953. Keith was in the military and served in Austria until 1954, when his enlistment ended.

When Keith returned, he helped with the farming at the McDowell farm until he attended barber school. During that time their first son, Rikki, was born. They moved to a farm near Lockridge in 1965. Sonja, Sheri, Shawn and Todd were born during those years. The Parcell family operated the café in Lockridge, with the children helping both on the farm and the café. The family attended Lockridge Baptist Church. Peggy kept busy with caring for her family, helping on the farm, sewing for other people, church work, and foster children, including Rachel (Jason and Charlie) Armintrout of Auburn, Nebraska. During this time, Peggy also taught at Lockridge Elementary School, doing several long-term jobs and ending her teaching career as the school’s computer lab teacher. Upon her retirement, both she and Keith enjoyed quilting and gardening. They made an embroidered quilt for each of their ten grandchildren. They served as camp hosts at Lake Darling for 2 years. They traveled to visit their children living out of state. In the fall of 1985, they moved from the farm into Lockridge, where they remodeled their current home.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Keith, of 69 years, her children, Rikki (Brenda) Parcell of Mt. Pleasant, Sonja (Dan) Graber of Lockridge, Sheri (Don) Peterson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Shawn (Judy) Parcell of Lincoln, Nebraska and Todd Parcell of Lockridge, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, one sister, Pat Varner, of Towanda, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers and sisters.
