Kenneth Leon Gillispie 86, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa died at 11:13 pm on Friday, December 21, 2018, at New London Specialty Care.

Born on September 24, 1932 near Downing, Missouri, he was the son of Dewey Herman & Edna Mae (Beeler) Gillispie. He was raised by his maternal Grandparents, Ed &Nora Beeler of Downing, Missouri, due to the death of his mother when he was two.

Ken attended school in Downing, Missouri. He was an Army veteran, serving as a Food Service Technician with the 25th Infantry Division in the Korean War. During his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the US Service Medal, the Good Conduct and Korean Service Medals, in addition to two Bronze Campaign Stars and two Overseas Bars.

He married Sharon Thornbrugh, in 1956. They later divorced. On April 30, 1960, in Garden City, Kansas, he married Margaret Baxter. Ken and Margaretís love for each other was incredibly strong and carried them through life. Over the years, Ken and Margaret opened their home to many of Margaretís brothers and sisters, raising June, David, and Anna. Margaret passed away on July 7, 2006.
Ken worked 17 years driving for Pepsi Cola and Dr. Pepper in Kansas. After moving to Iowa, he worked 7 years at the IAAP in Middletown. He retired from Dial Corp. in Fort Madison, after 22 years of service. After retiring from Dial Corp., he went on to work for Shottenkirk for 11 years.
Ken loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed long drives, Friday night dinners with his close circle of friends, fishing, and competing in bass tournaments. Ken was a member of the Mt. Pleasant American Legion, Post 58 and the New London Christian Church, in New London, Iowa.

Surviving to honor his memory are four daughters and three sons: Becky Frank (Bill) of Bucklin, KS, Anneta Palazzola (Jim) of Camdenton, MO, Tina Johnson (Jim) of Vail, AZ, Melissa Smith (Dan) of Lockridge, IA, Michael Gillispie (Stephanie Ochipinti) of Tampa, FL, Gary Gillispie (Kim Bair) of Newton, IA, and Ed Gillispie of Davenport, IA.
Ken is also survived by his cousins: Margaret and Jerry Scurlock of Bloomfield, IA, Hilma Miller of Macon, MO, Nora Lou Toney of Glenwood, MO, and Bernadeane Easter of Shreveport, LA, in addition to his brother, Ray Gillispie of Mt. Pleasant, 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his first wife, Sharon; his parents and grandparents; his 2 uncles, Estelle and Raymond Beeler; his aunt, Phoebe Goosey; a very special aunt, Ruth Beeler; his step mother Lucille Gillispie, 2 brothers-in-law, Leroy and David Baxter; and his beloved pets, Holly Ann and Shy Ann.

Memorial plans were made well in advance and Ken wishes his passing to be a time in which his life and legacy are celebrated.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the New London Christian Church in New London with Rev. Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with full military honors conducted by the Henry Count Honor Guard. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 that evening. Memorials may be directed to the Mt. Pleasant American Legion Post 58 or to the New London Christian Church.
